Can a heat pump work with your existing geyser?

Some hot water heat-pump systems can connect to an existing geyser. That does not mean every geyser or property is suitable: the proposed equipment and existing installation need to be assessed together.

Start with the right type of heat pump

This guide concerns heating household water. An air-to-air system for room heating or cooling is a different application. Tell the installer whether your priority is showers and taps, room comfort, or separate projects for both.

Identify the existing setup

If you have them, gather the geyser model, storage capacity, age and service records. Mention any current faults and any existing solar-water-heating equipment or controls. Do not buy a heat pump on the assumption that it will integrate with an unidentified system.

Questions for the property assessment

  • Is the existing geyser suitable for the proposed heat-pump system, or does it need replacement?
  • What household hot-water demand is the proposal designed to meet?
  • Where will equipment sit, and how will it be accessed for future work?
  • What plumbing, electrical work and changes to controls are included?
  • How will the existing heating element or other backup operate?
  • Who handles commissioning, handover and support for each part of the installation?

Compare a complete installation

Ask for one clear scope identifying equipment, connections, controls and any separate work. Establish which contractor is responsible for each part before accepting a quote. A compatible product still needs a workable installation plan for your property.

Make running-cost estimates explain themselves

If an estimate includes savings, ask for its assumptions: your present water-heating use, electricity tariff, household demand and the proposed equipment. Keep estimated running costs separate from the installed price. A supplier example is not a guaranteed saving for your household.
