Note the length, width and ceiling height. For an open-plan space, describe connected areas and which doors usually remain open. A small sketch can make the layout easier to explain than a single floor-area figure.
Why floor area is only a starting point
Sun exposure, windows, insulation and how a room is used also affect the assessment. Capacity ratings describe heating or cooling output, rather than the physical size of the unit. Treat online sizing estimates as a starting point and have the proposed capacity checked for the actual room.
Bring this checklist to the conversation
- Room dimensions and a simple layout sketch.
- When direct sun reaches the windows, and any blinds or shading.
- Known roof or ceiling insulation; say if you are unsure.
- How many people normally use the room, and at what times.
- Whether you want cooling, heating or both.
- Possible indoor and outdoor locations, access restrictions and estate rules.
Explain what comfort means in this room
For a bedroom, mention sleeping hours and where the bed sits. For a home office, describe the desk position and normal working hours. Ask how the proposed unit position, airflow and sound specifications suit that use, rather than choosing on capacity alone.
Check the recommendation before buying
Ask the installer to explain the proposed capacity, unit locations and installation scope. Keep the model references and agreed work in your written quote. Photos from normal, safely accessible positions can help the initial conversation; the site assessment determines the final plan.
